Story
When the Lord Brahma created the world also referred to as Brahamand , he created the ‘Four Kumaras’ or the ‘Chatursana’. As the Four Kumaras were born from the mind by just a desire (manas) of Brahma they are referred to as his Manasaputras. Their names are: Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and Sanat Kumara.
When the four Kumaras came into existence, they were all embodiments of purity with no negative qualities like pride, anger, attachment, lust or material desires (Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, Ahankaar etc). The four Kumaras were created to help in the process of creating the World. However, the Kumaras refused his directions to procreate and instead devoted themselves to God and took to celibacy (brahmacarya). They requested their father to bless grant them the boon of remaining as five years old for life.
The Kumaras set out to meet Lord Vishnu in Vaikuntha, but were stopped at the gate by Jaya and Vijaya, the gate keepers of the Vaikuntha; taking them to be children. They told the Kumaras that Shri Vishnu is resting and that they cannot meet him at this time. Sanat Kumars replied; the Lord loves his devotees and will never refuse to meet them. You are no one to stop us from seeing our dear Lord. But Jay Vijay didn’t understand their point and kept on arguing for long time. Though Sanat Kumars are very pure and have no trigunas of Maya in them (Sato, Rajo, Tamo) but by the plan of Lord to teach the gate keepers a lesson, he infused anger in the minds of Sanat Kumars. The enraged Kumaras cursed both the gate keepers Jaya and Vijaya that they would have to give up their divinity and be born as mortals on Earth and live there.
When Jaya and Vijaya were cursed by the Sanat Kumaras, Lord Vishnu appeared before them and the gatekeepers requested Lord Vishnu to rid them of the curse of the Sanat Kumaras. Lord Vishnu refused to rid them of the curse and instead he gave Jaya and Vijaya two options.
Option 1:- Take 7 (seven) births on Earth as a devotee of Lord Vishnu.
Option 2:- Take 3 (three) births as Lord Vishnu’s enemy.
After serving either of the 2 options, they will re-attain their stature at Vaikuntha and be with Him permanently. Jaya and Vijaya couldn’t bear the thought of staying away from Lord Vishnu for seven lives, hence they agreed to take 3 (three) births in the form an enemy of Lord Vishnu.
First Birth
Jaya and Vijaya were born as Hiraneyaksha and Hiraneyakashyipu in Satya Yuga. Hiranyaksha was an asura, the son of Diti and Kashyapa rishi. He was slain by the Lord Vishnu after he (Hiranyaksha) took the Earth to the bottom of what has been described as the “Cosmic Ocean”. Lord Vishnu assumed the Avatar of a boar – Varaha and dove into the ocean to lift the Earth, in the process slaying Hiranyaksha who was obstructing Him. The battle lasted one thousand years. He had an elder brother named Hiranyakashipu, who after having undertaken penances which made him incredibly powerful and invincible unless several conditions were met, was later slain by Lord Narasimha, another incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Hiranyakashipu was an Asura and the king of demons.
After the death of Hiranyakashyap’s younger brother Hiranyaksha at the hands of Lord Vishnu’s Varaha avatar, Hiranyakashipu begins to hate Lord Vishnu. He decides to kill him by acquiring mystical powers, which he believes Lord Brahma, the creator, will grant him if he undergoes many years of great penance for Lord Brahma just as the Lord bestowed powers on other demons. Lord Brahma appears in front of Hiranyakashipu and grants him a boon of his choice. But when Hiranyakashipu asks for immortality, Brahma refuses. Hiranyakashipu then makes the following request: “O my lord, O best giver, if you will kindly grant me the boon I desire, please do not let me die from any creature you have created.
Grant me the boon that I should not die inside or outside any residence, during the day or at night, nor on the ground or in the sky. Grant me that I may die by none other than the ones you created, or by any weapon, or by any human or animal.”
Grant me boon that I do not receive death from any living being, living or non-living. Grant me further, that I may not be killed by any god or demon or any great snake of the lower planets. Since no one can kill you on the battlefield, you have no competitors. Therefore, grant me this boon that I too should not have any rival. Give me sole dominion over all living beings and presiding deities, and give me all the glory derived from that position. Also, grant me all the mystic powers obtained by long penance and practice of yoga, for these cannot be destroyed at any time.”
While Hiranyakashipu is doing penance to obtain this boon, Lord Indra and other gods take advantage of the opportunity in his absence to attack his house. At this point the divine sage Narada intervenes to protect Hiranyakashipu’s wife Kayadhu, whom he describes as ‘sinless’. Narada takes Kayadhu into his care, and when she is under his guidance, his unborn child (Hiranyakashipu’s son) Prahlad becomes influenced by the paralokik and gets the instructions of the sage even in the womb. Later, growing up as a child, Prahlad began to show signs of Narada’s prenatal training and gradually became recognized as a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, much to his father’s dismay.
Hiranyakashipu eventually becomes so angry and upset at his son’s devotion to Lord Vishnu that he decides that he must kill him. But every time he attempts to kill the boy, Prahlad is protected by Lord Vishnu’s mysterious power. When asked, Prahlad refused to accept his father as the supreme lord of the universe and claimed that Lord Vishnu is omnipresent and omnipresent. To which Hiranyakashipu points to a nearby pillar and asks if ‘his Vishnu’ is in it: “Prahlad then replies, he was, he is and he will be.”
Lord Vishnu has chosen to appear here as Narasimha to be able to kill Hiranyakashipu without violating the boon given by Brahma. Hiranyakashipu cannot be killed by a human, a god or an animal, but Narasimha is none of these, as he is in the form of human, part animal, an avatar of Lord Vishnu.
He arrives at Hiranyakashipu at twilight (when neither day nor night) on the threshold of a courtyard (neither indoors nor outdoors), and holds the demon on his thighs (neither earth nor space. Using his nails (neither animate nor inanimate) as a weapon, he removes and kills the demon.
Second Birth
In the next Treta Yuga – Jaya and Vijaya were born as Ravana and Kumbhakarna, and were killed by Lord Vishnu in his avtars – as Ram and Lakshmana.
Third Birth
At the end of the Dwapara Yuga – Jaya and Vijaya were born their as Shishupala and Dantavakra (an ally of Jarasandha, a friend of Shishupala and an enemy of Vasudeva Krishna) and Lord Krishna appeared Himself along with Balarama and killed them.
Avatar of Maa Shoolini
It was the time when Lord Vishnu(Sri Hari) took avtar of Lord Narasimha /Narasingh / Narsingh to save his devotee Prahlad and as the 4th avtar of Lord Vishnu. Narasingh ji is half-man and half-lion, having a human-like torso and lower body, with a lion-like face and claws.
After killing Hiranyakashyp, none of the Devi or devtas was able to calm Narasiṁha’s fury and Narsingh ji become violent and destructive, which was controlled by none.
First, the Devi devtas present there sent “Prahlad” a child to calm the aggressive Lord Narsingha, as they thought Prahlad the Child will calm him down. Lord Narsingha ignored Prahlad and Continued with his anger and Destruction.
The Devi’s and devtas then pleaded with “Devi Laxmi” to calm Lord Narisngha as she was his consort but Lord Narsingh ignored her too and continued the anger and destruction; the cause of which was his annihilation of Hiranyakashipu (Hiranyakashyap). The Devi Devtas then prayed to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva after listening to all he decided to calm and Tame Lord Narsingha. It was only Lord Shiva who could help Devi Devtas; no one had so much power to calm him but only Devon ke Dev Mahadev. Lord Shiva opened his eyes, he was in deep meditation, he heard the prayers of Devi Devtas and after hearing them Lord Shiva took a deep breath and created a Devi whose form was the same as Lord Narsingha it was “Devi Pratyangira”
“Devi Pratyangira” who is also called Narasimhi, Simhamukha Laskshmi. She is the incarnation of Devi Shakti or the fierce avatar of Maa Laxmi. She is fierce and described as the powerful goddess with a male lion’s face. She is a female with same Complexion, Nature, Physical appearance, who could match the power of Lord Narishga and also the union of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi. But still Lord Narsimha did not get calmed down and continued with his fury.
"The Devi Devtas told Lord Shiva that now he and only he - Devon ke Dev Mahadev can save the entire Universe."
Then, Lord Shiva took a form and incarnated as Sharabha, Sarabeshwara, to tame Narasingh ji .
His form was Part of Bird and Part of Lion also called Sharabeshwaramurti.
In the Sharabha Avatar of Lord Shiva, the Right wing was, from where Maa Shoolini was incarnated and in the Left Wing was Maa Durga. This fierce form of Lord Shiva, Sarabeshwara was an eight-legged beast, mightier than a lion and elephant and in form larger than any existing creature.
And if you see carefully in the picture you can see Maa Shoolini, She is in the right wing of Sharabha ji, and she is black in color; that is why she is called Saloni, Shool Dharini as she is a form of Maa Kali or Maa Durga. She is also known as Shoolini Durga.
The battle to tame Lord Narasingji lasted 18 days and ended with his defeat.
Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu Fight
But this was not the end after Lord Shiva (Sharbha) taming Narsingh ji; then again Lord Vishnu assumed the form of the ferocious Gandaberunda bird-animal to combat Lord Shiva, Sharabha the super power. The Linga Purana and Sharabha Upanishad also mention this mutilation of Narasimha and Gandaberuda.
After the Narsingh avatar of Lord Vishnu got tamed by Lord Shiva, which angered Lord Vishnu and he again took a form of Gandaberuda. Gandaberuda was having two heads, multiple rows of teeth, was black in complexion and had wide wings. The destructive energy of Narasimha as Gandaberuda (Vishnu) in form of two headed bird began to fight fiercely with Lord Sharbha (Lord Shiva) for 21 days.
After such a fierce fight Lord Vishnu as Gandaberuda bowed to Lord Shiva and stopped the fight and Lord Sharbha (Lord Shiva) tore apart the two headed bird Gandaberuda.
Lord Vishnu prayed to Lord Shiva and bowed to him and displayed his peace and Finally Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu transformed back in their own form of Bholey Nath. The purpose of Lord Shiva assuming the form of Sharabha was to ensure that the lion body of Vishnu was discarded and he got united with his original divine form.
Truth is
